Mentoplasty has been so dramatically enhanced through the use of laterally extended implants and silicone elastomer extension wafers that it is now more correctly described as customized mandibular contouring. This article describes a customized approach to mandibular profile contouring using implant extenders, or wafers.
Mentoplasty is most commonly proposed by the surgeon rather than requested by the patient. In the authors' practice, more than 20% of rhinoplasties are now accompanied by augmentation mentoplasty. It often proves to be the most important component of facial re-contouring in face lift procedures. This article explains our approach to patient analysis and implant selection. We describe a technique that provides a simple means for accurate and secure implant placement and fixation. We ex-plain the use of the implant extender (wafer) in achieving precise profile contouring.
