Mentoplasty Mandibular Contouring
Alvin L Glasgold, M.D., and Mark J. Glasgold, M.D.
To consider mentoplasty as a simple procedure solely to in-crease chin projection loses sight of the numerous cosmetic advantages it provides. In the past, mentoplasty was always taught as a small segment of a rhinoplasty course and generally considered an adjunct procedure to enhance rhinoplasty. The concept of recontouring the lower third of the face with implants has advanced so that it now stands by itself as a significant procedure in facial aesthetic surgery.
In this course we would like to develop a sophisticated approach to the surgical correction of the lower third of the face with implants, improve your surgical technique in mentoplasty. and enhance your results in facial aesthetic surgery. To achieve this we have the following objectives:
1. Indications: Develop an awareness of all the benefits of mentoplasty. 2. Facial analysis: Improve your ability to analyze the lower third of the face in the retrognathic individual. 3. Implant selection: Increase your awareness of the various chin implants available and increase your sophistication in implant selection. 4. Technique: Describe a simple technique to avoid complications and allow for secure and accurate implant placement. 5. Custom contouring: The extension wafer is a means of improving accuracy in profile projection while reducing trauma and surgical manipulation.
