Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision Rhinoplasty Open Approach
ALVIN I. GLASGOLD, M.D.*

Abstract

Revision rhinoplasty has always been a great challenge. Often the difficulty is related to the inability to ascertain the cause of the problem. Sometimes correction is unreliable because of changes occurring during the healing process. Because of this, many qualified rhinoplastic surgeons shy away from revision surgery. In many cases an unsatisfactory result is left uncorrected, resulting in an unhappy patient.

The open approach to revision rhinoplasty has greatly enhanced the predictability of the results, particularly in tip revision. This occurs because the open technique exposes the cause of the problem directly and allows for a more accurate assessment of the means to be instituted in correcting the problem.

This article explores the challenges presented by open rhinoplasty and the methods utilized to correct a variety of problems using the open approach.
