Laser skin resurfacing promotes a more youthful skin texture and reduction in facial wrinkling, especially around the eyes, cheeks and mouth. This is accomplished through a precise controlled beam of laser light, known as the carbon dioxide (CO2) laser, which vaporizes away damaged upper layers of the skin, stimulates new collagen formation and tightens facial skin. Acne and chicken pox scars, brown "liver spots" and precancerous lesions may also be benefited.

Less dramatic results but quicker healing time may be achieved with the Erbium/ Yag laser. Dermabrasion seeks to accomplish similar results using a wire brush or diamond fraise. Each of the procedures produce a post-operative erythema or redness, easily concealed with make-up, fading over one to four months.

Post-operative results for each of these procedures is very "operator" dependent. They are not simple to learn or perform, nor quick to do, requiring surgical experience and competence and patience. This last statement is true about all cosmetic surgery.

Local anesthesia and sedation or general anesthesia may be used and the procedure can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour to complete. Some cases may require more than one session. After the procedure, patients may experience some temporary swelling, discomfort or lightening of the treated areas. Most patients can return to work within two weeks, though sun exposure will need to be limited for six to twelve months. Though the results of laser resurfacing are long-lasting, new wrinkles can form as the skin continues to age.
