Until recently, breast enhancement without artificial materials, invasive surgery or the risk of rejection seemed a fanciful goal for women who wanted larger breasts.

But advances in regenerative cell technology and the use of the body’s own fat now make it possible to achieve permanent, natural results without the potential downsides posed by artificial implants.

For women who want a modest to moderate increase in breast size, regenerative cell-enhanced fat transfer offers the promise of a lasting, natural alternative to implants.

As an internationally recognized expert in autologous fat transfer, Dr. Glasgold is now applying this skill to the breast. He is the first surgeon in New Jersey to offer regenerative cell-enhanced natural breast enhancement.

For women who want a modest to moderate increase in breast size, regenerative cell-enhanced fat transfer offers the promise of a lasting, natural alternative to implants.

“Breast enlargement previously involved the surgical insertion of artificial implants. Unfortunately, these foreign materials could lead to complications, rejection or unnatural results,” Dr. Glasgold said.

What is ‘Natural Breast Enhancement?’

Natural breast enhancement is a procedure in the dynamic new field of regenerative aesthetics. It involves injecting the body’s own harvested fat which is enhanced with regenerative cells into the breast. The regenerative cells improve the fat cells’ ability to survive and become a permanent enhancement.

The regenerative cells act as a ‘fertilizer’ for the transferred fat, enhancing its ability to augment the breast.

This procedure isolates the adipose-derived regenerative cells from fat that has been harvested from the patient’s diet-resistant sites by liposuction. In the same surgery, in our surgical suite, these regenerative cells are then mixed with the patient’s harvested fat. This enhanced fat is then injected into the patient’s breasts.

“The regenerative cells act as a “fertilizer” for the transferred fat, enhancing its ability to augment the breast,” said Dr. Glasgold.

The liposuction procedure also provides some reduction in the patient’s diet-resistant fat at the harvest site, usually the stomach, hips, legs or buttocks.

Who Is a Candidate for Natural Breast Enhancement?

Adult women of almost any age who are seeking a modest to moderate increase in breast size of one to two cup sizes are appropriate candidates for natural breast enhancement. They may be women who are post-partum, those who have lost a lot of weight, altering their breast size, or younger women who have reached adulthood. Patients should not be on Herceptin®. Smoking is another consideration, since it can negatively affect the transplanted fat and reduce volume from the procedure.

“Natural breast enhancement is for women who want a more natural look. The results do not look like implants,” said Dr. Glasgold.

What to Expect With Natural Breast Enhancement

Before surgery: Dr. Glasgold will meet with you to review your medical history and discuss your goals to make sure they are realistic and achievable. You will be asked to have a baseline mammogram prior to surgery. Photos will be taken of your breasts and the sites where fat will be harvested. A second pre-op visit will be scheduled to answer any questions and provide preparation instructions.

Day of surgery: The procedure takes place in the surgical suite at The Glasgold Group’s Highland Park office. You will be placed under IV or “twilight” sedation, not general anesthesia.

The first part of the procedure will involve liposuction from a diet-resistant area of your body that you have identified in your meetings with Dr. Glasgold. A portion of the fat will then be placed in the stem source machine, where the regenerative cells will be isolated and the majority of the harvested fat will be processed for injection.

The isolated regenerative cells will then be mixed with your fat and then injected around healthy breast tissue, not into it. No incision are necessary. No stitches will be necessary. You will go home the same day, about a few hours after the start of the procedure.

Post-surgery: You should be able to resume normal activity in 24 to 48 hours following the procedure. Around the liposuction site, you can expect to have bruising, swelling and soreness. The breasts also will have bruising and swelling, but little or no soreness. You will go home with protective dressings on the liposuction and injection sites and will be given a soft bra to wear for one to two weeks.

As healing occurs, you also will notice a decrease in your diet-resistant fat at the liposuction sites, an added cosmetic benefit of the procedure.

For up to a year, your breasts will continue to achieve their final size as the transferred fat cells grow and integrate. Dr. Glasgold stresses that natural breast enhancement is less predictable than artificial implants. The result can be enhanced with a second fat transfer.

“It’s all natural material. There is nothing synthetic or foreign in your body that can be rejected,” he said.
