Chemical peels are a popular way to temporarily improve skin texture and minimize fine wrinkling. The 80-90% glycolic acid peel can produce remarkable enhancement of skin texture if performed monthly.

Chemical peels may be performed in a plastic surgeon’s office or an outpatient surgical center. Anesthesia is typically not required, though sedation and EKG monitoring may be used. Patients may experience a slight stinging during treatment. It can take anywhere from one to two hours to treat the full face, and a series of peels may be required in some cases.
After a TCA peel, some temporary throbbing, tingling and swelling may also occur. Patients are typically advised to avoid sun exposure for several months. Post-operative instructions will be given for the care of the skin as it heals. Patients can typically resume their normal activities right away after an AHA peel, or within five to ten days after a TCA peel.
