One way of looking at this is fillers are like using a fine paintbrush for trim, you can be very precise but you would not want to cover a large area. A fat transfer is like using a large paint brush to do the walls. You can make large changes to the overall shape and volume of the face. Fat transfers have the added benefit of improving skin texture. Fat transfers are the safest technique for creating a permanent change with no risk of granulomas (lumps) which occur with permanent fillers. Some fillers have the advantage of being temporary so patients who are worried about the change can preview it (in the case of hyaluronic acid it can be dissolved). We have also found that over time hyaluronic acid injections around the eyes can look a little swollen which requires dissolving the product. This does not occur with fat.
