There are a number of cosmetic procedures that don’t require surgery and have minimal recovery periods. “Patients to whom these procedures appeal generally fall into two groups: young women who are just starting to see aging in their faces and want to look a little better without taking too much time off for recovery, and older women who could use the surgery, but for personal reasons aren’t ready to make the commitment,” says Mark Glasgold, M.D., a board-certified facial plastic surgeon. Dr. Glasgold is a partner with Alvin Glasgold, M.D., also a board-certified facial plastic surgeon, of the Glasgold Group for Plastic Surgery in Highland Park. Wrinkles caused by muscle contractions manifesting themselves as crow’s feet around the eyes, frown lines and creases around the lips can be improved through Botox injections which last about three months. “Repeating the injections prolongs the effects of the Botox, and it’s a safe technique,” he says. A second procedure that offers temporary results involves fat transplantation. Here, fat is harvested from the body, usually the thighs, and injected into facial grooves. Usually, more fat than is needed is harvested and frozen for later use. Fat transplantation is especially effective for filling in lines that form in the corners of the mouth and in the hollows of the cheeks.
