Teens and Rhinoplasty: Are You Ready for Nasal Surgery?

February 5, 2015 by Glasgold Group

: Is Your Teen Ready for Rhinoplasty? When planned well and performed for the right patient, a rhinoplasty surgery can do much to improve the nasal structure and overall facial harmony. From small changes to the nasal tip to resizing of the entire nose, all types of rhinoplasty surgery can make a dramatic and lasting impact. Because rhinoplasty is not an anti-aging procedure, it is common for patients of nearly all ages to seek cosmetic improvements through nasal surgery. The procedure has become especially popular among teens and young 20-somethings. At this young age, special considerations should be taken when planning a rhinoplasty procedure.

Has Your Nose Fully Matured?

Before you can plan the details of your rhinoplasty, you must determine if you are an appropriate age to consider surgery .  It is important that potential candidates for surgery are at the appropriate degree of physical and emotional maturity.  As a general rule surgery to the nose should not be performed until the patientis at or close to their peak physical growth.  An important mark is that teenagers should have gone through puberty.  The age at which teenagers are candidates for rhinoplasty is younger in girls as they generally reach physical maturity at a younger age; in contrast boys are usually a couple of years behind before reaching this point.  The other factor is emotional maturity, the teenager should have a good understanding of what to expect and be comfortable with recovery process.

There is no strict rule on the correct age for surgery. An important part of the consultation is determining if you are a good candidate or if you should delay consideration of rhinoplasty until older.

To truly determine the maturity of your nose and your eligibility for rhinoplasty, you should consult directly with a board certified facial plastic surgeon.

What Is Your Reason for Rhinoplasty Surgery?

No matter what your age, every rhinoplasty patient has his or her own reasons to seek nasal surgery. Your facial plastic surgeon will likely be interested in your personal motivation. It can help him or her to determine whether you could be a good candidate for surgery as well as to better understand what you want to achieve with your rhinoplasty. In the case of younger patients, a surgeon may be especially interested in a patient’s reasons to help determine if surgery is appropriate.

Some of the most common reasons patients choose rhinoplasty are:

  • To correct imbalance of the facial features, which can be caused by a nose that it too big or too small.
  • To fix an aesthetic concern, such as a pointy nasal tip or hump on the nasal bridge.
  • To achieve a better self-image and overcome emotional stress caused by a nose that they are unhappy with.
  • To correct functional problems with breathing or sinus congestion.

Some younger patients can sometimes be motivated by external factors rather than their own personal desires. Teens who are bullied for their noses may turn to surgery to avoid name-calling and teasing. Others might choose rhinoplasty to become more popular or make a boyfriend or girlfriend happy with them. When patients have reasons that are induced by peer-pressure or fear, they are less likely to find satisfaction with their results. Talk openly with your family members or a person you trust, then open up to your facial plastic surgeon. If surgery is not right for you, they can help you to address your concerns in another way.

Do You Have a Good Support Network?

Every rhinoplasty patient should be prepared to involve loved ones and to rely on their support network as they prepare for surgery, make their way through recovery, and adjust emotionally to their cosmetic changes. Young patients can be especially vulnerable to these mental and emotional challenges and should not try to “go it alone.” Experience has shown that patients with a strong support network are more likely to be satisfied with their results, experience a smooth recovery, and reduce their risks for complications. When people are helping to care for you, you’re taking better care of yourself as well. Your physical recovery can be difficult at times and, if you involve your parents or friends, you’ll find strength in those who care about your well-being.

Can You Be Honest with Your Surgeon?

Your rhinoplasty consultation is your best chance to plan a successful rhinoplasty surgery and that means you must be completely honest with your facial plastic surgeon. Don’t hide facts about your medical history, lifestyle habits, past surgeries, and current medications. By omitting information about yourself, you might put yourself at unnecessary risk for many serious complications. Being open with your facial plastic surgeon is the best way to ensure that you are completely satisfied and safe throughout your surgical process and recovery.

Are You Looking for Natural Results?

In order to be considered a success, the results of your rhinoplasty surgery must appear natural, as though you were born with the nose you now have. To achieve natural results, your facial plastic surgeon will make his expert recommendations based on your facial structure, facial proportions, ethnicity, individual concerns, and desired results. While you may have an idea of the nose you want already, your surgeon is the best qualified to determine which changes are appropriate for your personal look. Plan your surgery together for your best results.
