What "Double Board-Certified" Actually Requires
Double board-certified means a surgeon holds ABFPRS certification on top of a primary board certification, most often the American Board of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery (ABOHNS), though some facial plastic surgeons come from a plastic surgery background certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). Both certifications require independently passing rigorous exams; neither one substitutes for the other.
ABFPRS certification specifically requires passing both a written and an oral examination, completed only after finishing that 12-month, face-only fellowship described above. This is confirmed directly by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. The oral portion typically requires the surgeon to defend their own surgical case outcomes before a panel of examiners, not just answer written questions from memory.
A surgeon who advertises simply "board-certified," with no board named, is a red flag worth pausing on. Legitimate certifications are specific and verifiable:
- Named board (ABFPRS, ABOHNS, or ABPS), not a generic or self-created "board"
- A certification date and, where applicable, a recertification cycle
- A specialty that matches the procedure being performed

Where Scope Overlaps and Where It Doesn't
Rhinoplasty, deep plane facelift, and facial fat grafting sit squarely inside the facial-plastics scope; these are procedures a facial plastic surgeon performs at high volume as the core of their practice, not as one offering among many. Body contouring and breast reconstruction fall outside that scope entirely — they belong to general plastic and reconstructive surgery training and are not part of an ABFPRS-certified surgeon's practice focus.
This concentration shows up in national procedure data, too. Blepharoplasty was the most-performed facial cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States in 2024, ahead of facelift and rhinoplasty, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, a volume of demand that face-only practices like Glasgold Group are structured around, performing only one facial surgery per day to give each case full attention.
