What Is a Neck Lift?

A direct neck lift procedure removes the excess skin and fat from the neck, chin and jawline, restoring and revealing the angular shape of the jawline, as well as firming and tightening the overall area. The result is a much more youthful and athletic appearance with reduced signs of aging. Most candidates for a neck lift are those with skin laxity in their necks. Sagging neck skin is mainly due to age, with most patients noticing a loss of elasticity beginning in their late thirties to early forties. However, it can also be caused by factors such as a genetic predisposition, excess weight, or a poor lifestyle habit. The loose skin, “turkey neck” look is caused by the platysma muscle, and everyone with this issue can benefit from a neck lift. The platysma is actually two thin sheets of muscle that run across each side of the neck. These normally do not quite meet in the middle, and as the aging process progresses, the muscle edges in the center of the neck begin to sag downward, creating two visible bands that run downward from the chin toward the collarbone, contributing to the turkey neck or turkey wattle effect.

Neck Lift Best Candidates

Ideal candidates for a neck lift in New Jersey are individuals who are bothered by the appearance of a double chin or sagging skin in the neck area. They may have tried non-surgical options, such as cosmetic procedures, without achieving the desired results. These candidates typically have good overall health and realistic expectations for their surgical outcomes. Neck lift surgery targets the platysma muscle in the neck, which contributes to signs of aging and a less youthful appearance. Patients need to consult with board-certified plastic surgeons who specialize in facial rejuvenation to ensure they receive the best care and achieve optimal results. The surgical technique used during a neck lift can be customized to address each individual’s unique concerns and goals, resulting in a more sculpted and contoured neck that complements their facial appearance. There are minimally invasive techniques, but the results from these aren’t as noticeable.

Preparing for Neck Lift Surgery

Preparing for neck lift surgery involves several steps to ensure a successful procedure and optimal results. Prior to the surgery, it is essential to have a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in facial plastic surgery. During this consultation, the surgeon will assess your individual situation and discuss your desired outcome, ensuring that you have reasonable expectations for the surgery. Additionally, you may be advised on any pre-operative preparations, such as avoiding certain medications or supplements that can increase bleeding during surgery.

It is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle leading up to the procedure, including proper nutrition and exercise. The surgeon may also provide guidelines for skincare routines and products that can help improve the condition of your facial skin prior to surgery. Preparing for neck lift surgery involves taking care of your overall health, addressing any fatty tissue or lax skin concerns, maintaining a natural appearance through reasonable expectations, and following medical advice.

Neck Lift Procedure

The Day Before Neck Lift

The day before surgery should progress just as any other day would. Be sure to eat well and stay hydrated. Take a shower the night before as well as the morning of your surgery. Avoid using anything on the face and neck area, such as aftershave or post-shaving lotion. The skin needs to be clean and free of anything foreign.

The Day of Neck Lift

Wear comfortable clothing, preferably something that zips or buttons, as your neck area will be mildly sore, so you’ll want to avoid anything that pulls over your head.

Neck Lift In-Office

The Direct Neck Lift is performed in our accredited operating suite as an outpatient with mild IV sedation. Your safety is of paramount importance and it is for that reason that we do not use a general anesthetic. We use what is called conscious sedation – meaning that you won’t feel any pain, you’ll simply feel like you’re asleep.

During the procedure, we place incisions under the chin down the center of the neck to cut out excess skin, removing excess fat and tightening the droopy muscle. Placing the incision down the middle of the neck rather than behind the ears allows the doctor performing the surgery greater access to the platysma, the muscle responsible for that “banded” look, so it can be more easily repaired. This incision also provides direct access to the majority of the fat accumulation, allowing for far more effective results in getting rid of the turkey wattle and reshaping the neck contours and jawline.

The neck lift surgery takes about an hour and a half.

Neck Lift Recovery

You will be able to return home after a brief stay in our recovery room, where we can ensure that you’re recovering normally. Having mild pain and swelling for seven to ten days is completely normal, with patients usually only reporting discomfort right after surgery. We encourage you to sleep with your head slightly elevated to minimize swelling. We can also provide pain medication if needed. Although regular exercise can be resumed quickly, take it very easy for the first few days, limiting activity to non-impact exercises such as walking.

The final outcome is the result of a great beginning. We take a nontraditional approach to healing, believing that recovery begins before surgery, not after. We do not use wraps or drains of any type and encourage neck lift patients to resume their regular exercise routine in as little as a week after surgery, believing that this aids the good skin in the overall healing process. We have had patients who did not mind returning to work after a few days with sutures still in.

ten recovery tips for neck lift

  • Follow Post-Operative Care Instructions: Adhere strictly to the instructions provided by your surgeon regarding wound care, medications, and activity restrictions.

  • Manage Pain and Discomfort: Take prescribed pain medications as directed to manage discomfort. Ice packs can also help reduce swelling and numbness.

  • Keep Your Head Elevated: Maintain your head elevated with pillows while resting and sleeping to reduce swelling and promote healing.

  • Avoid Strenuous Activities: As recommended by your surgeon, refrain from activities that could strain your neck, such as heavy lifting or vigorous exercise.

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to aid in healing and flush out toxins from your body.

  • Eat Nutritious Foods: Follow a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals to support healing. Avoid foods that are difficult to chew or require excessive jaw movement.

  • Limit Sun Exposure: Protect your incision areas from direct sun exposure, as they may be sensitive and prone to pigmentation changes.

  • Attend Follow-Up Appointments: Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor your healing progress and address any concerns promptly.

  • Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Refrain from smoking and limit alcohol consumption, as they can impair healing and increase the risk of complications.

  • Be Patient: Allow yourself time to recover fully. Avoid rushing back into your normal routine too quickly to ensure optimal results and minimize complications.

Neck Lift Costs

The cost of a neck lift can vary depending on several factors, including the surgeon’s experience and reputation, the location of the clinic, and the specific techniques used during the procedure. On average, the cost of a neck lift in New Jersey can range from $5,000 to $12,000. This price typically includes the surgeon’s fee, anesthesia fees, facility fee, and post-operative care. It is important to note that this estimate does not include additional costs such as pre-operative consultations or any potential complications that may arise during or after surgery. To get an accurate cost estimate for your specific case, it is best to schedule a private consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in facial rejuvenation procedures. During this consultation, they can provide you with a personalized quote based on your individual needs and goals.

Potential Risks and Complications of Neck Lift Surgery

Like any surgical procedure, neck lift surgery carries potential risks and complications. These can include infection, bleeding, scarring, hematoma (blood clot), nerve injury, asymmetry, skin discoloration or pigmentation changes, hair loss around the incision site, and poor wound healing. It is important to discuss these risks with your surgeon and follow their pre- and post-operative instructions carefully to minimize the likelihood of complications. Additionally, choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon with expertise in neck lift procedures can help reduce the risk of complications and ensure a successful outcome.

How long does a direct neck lift last?

Will my neck have that “stretched” look?

Can I get the same results without having surgery?

How much time off from work will I need?

Do I need to quit smoking for this surgery?

What neck lift office is near me?

At what age can a direct neck lift be performed?

A direct neck lift can be done at any age, although typically, the patient is middle-aged or older.

How long does a direct neck lift last?

The removal of fat and loose skin, as well as the repositioning and tightening of the platysma muscle, are permanent. However, you will still age normally, and lifestyle decisions can affect this. It is recommended that you continue to take normal anti-aging precautions such as using sunscreen and eating healthy.

Will my neck have that “stretched” look?

No. Surgeries that only emphasize pulling and lifting without thought to other concerns can lead to a windswept or “done” look. The Glasgold Group is renowned for creating a natural and youthful look by combining traditional surgical methods with volume replacement.

Can I get the same results without having surgery?

While we can provide you with the latest in cosmetic enhancement treatments, nothing can eliminate the turkey neck and blurred jawline as well as a direct neck lift can.

How much time off from work will I need?

Most of our patients feel ready to return to work within one to two weeks, with many of them being able to return sooner. This is more of a concern with the initial appearance after surgery and how comfortable you feel going out in public than it is an issue with pain and discomfort.

Do I need to quit smoking for this surgery?

Yes, patients are told to stop smoking for at least four weeks prior to surgery as smoking may cause issues with healing.

What neck lift office is near me?

If you live near Princeton, NJ, The Glasgold Group offers Neck Lift among its services and is conveniently located at 4390 US-1 #100, Princeton, NJ 08540.
