Sculptra Anti-Aging Procedure
What is Sculptra?
Sculptra® is a unique injectable treatment that works differently than other anti-aging injections. The full results from a Sculptra injection do not appear instantly. Instead, they are more subtle, appearing over the course of several months. Sculptra is made from poly-L-lactic acid. It works by replacing lost collagen in the facial area, giving your face a fuller and more youthful appearance.
Poly-L-lactic acid is a completely biodegradable and biocompatible substance. It has been used for years in dissolvable stitches. The substance is absorbed by your body after it works to rebuild collagen. Since it’s biocompatible, no allergy testing is needed.
Sculptra is injected into the deep dermis of the skin. It has been approved for use to treat the smile lines or nasolabial folds between the mouth and nose, marionette lines on the side of the mouth, and wrinkles on the chin.
What is Treatment Like with Sculptra?
The surgeons of the Glasgold Group perform Sculptra in New Jersey in the office setting. The formulation contains an anesthetic so no additional anesthetic needs to be administered prior to injection, though it is an option for those who prefer it. During the treatment, a very fine needle is used to make multiple injections in the treatment area.
Though patients should take it easy for 24 hours after treatment, work and other normal activities can usually be resumed immediately afterward.
How Long Does Sculptra® Last and Are There Side Effects?
Results from Sculptra® can last for up to two years. Typically, you receive a series of injections over the course of three months. The exact number of injections you receive and the duration of treatment depends on your specific needs. The number of injections you receive during a treatment session also depends on the type of results you hope for.
Swelling at the injection site is common immediately following treatment. Some patients also experience pain or discomfort at the site of the injection. One way to reduce discomfort is to have the doctor apply a topical anesthetic to the injection area. Other common side effects include itchiness at the site of injection, redness, bruising and bleeding. If you experience side effects, talk to the doctor. You can reduce the chance of side effects by applying ice to the area and avoiding sun exposure immediately after treatment.
